5 Fun Facts About Saliva

1 – Ever wonder when you produce the most saliva?

Well, it is in the afternoon! Night time is also when you produce the least, which is what contributes to morning breath. Saliva sweeps particles and bacteria off of your teeth and when theres less of it, bacteria has a better environment to grow in.

2 – If you didn’t have saliva, you wouldn’t taste anything!

Turns out, it is very important in helping absorb flavors and spreading them over your tongue! I mean, who wouldn’t want to be able to taste?

3 – Saliva is chemically alkaline.

This helps reduce any tooth-harming acidity in your mouth. Being alkaline also gives saliva some antibacterial properties, keeping your mouth nice and healthy.

4 – You can tell if you are dehydrated by how much saliva youre producing!

If your mouth feels dry and your lips are cracked, chances are you could use some more water. Water is so important for your whole body, so dont ignore this first sign of dehydration!

5 – Saliva doesn’t actually come from your tongue.

It comes from six glands around your mouth. Two of these are found behind your jaw, and the other four are located underneath your tongue.

I hope these 5 fun facts about saliva have given you some informative insight to this underrated bodily function! Remember to see your dentist regularly and keep up with good dental hygiene! Call the office today, 833-357-9575, to schedule your next oral exam.
