It can be difficult getting kids to brush their teeth as much as they should. It’s usually not fun for them and they see it as a chore. However, with these 5 tips to teach your kids to brush, they’ll be happily taking care of those pearly whites in no time!
1 – Allow them to pick out their own toothbrush and toothpaste!
It can be more fun for your kids if they are allowed to be part of the creative process of choosing a cool toothbrush with their favorite character or colors on it. Sometimes adult toothpaste can be too strong and seem spicy as well. So helping them pick a toothpaste made for children will be a huge help in getting them to enjoy dental hygiene from a young age.
2 – A family affair!
Demonstrate how you brush your teeth to them and let them ask questions and be shown the whole process. Make it fun and silly so they can see its not big deal to brush their teeth. You could even improve your own dental health by doing it at the same time as they do. It can be an activity the whole family participates in. Everyone needs to take care of their teeth!
3 – Have a routine.
Be consistent! Have your kids brush their teeth after every meal, and set an alarm for a good before bedtime brushing too! Routine is very important for children in order to teach them good dental health and help them remember this even through adulthood.
4 – Incorporate a timer.
If they can get away with a quick swish around that barely really cleans their teeth, they will! I know I certainly did when I was little! Having a timer will give them a visual goal to work through and know exactly how long they should be brushing. You could even let them pick out a little two minute colored sand hourglass, or give them a snazzy stopwatch to make them feel all grown up. Whatever helps them get those teeth really brushed!
5 – Last but not least, dont forget to floss!
Flossing gets all those between the teeth crevices clean and particle free. Make sure they know how to do this important step as well! In the beginning, using the handheld flossers might be easier for your kids to use, and they also come in different colors theyll love as well.
