I had a decaying wisdom tooth and the whole crown part of it finally just decayed all the way through and broke off. I don’t see anything left. My sister thinks I should still see the dentist, but I’m not sure I do. What do you think?

Dear Kevin,

I’m going to start off by saying that you are one lucky man. That sounds like it was pretty bad decay. In most cases that would blow up into a tooth infection, which would be serious. You managed to dodge that bullet. While some dentists would tell you to go in anyway. In your case, I don’t think that is necessary.
If your tooth truly did break off all the way, then there is very little chance of an infection getting into the bone because the tooth is completely open. Your decay will even go quickly once there is no enamel left to damage.
I will add one word of caution. For the decay to get that bad, you probably haven’t been to the dentist in a while. That probably means you have other decaying teeth. You may not dodge a second bullet. I would at least go in sometime soon just for a general check up.
Untreated tooth infections can turn life threatening. People die from them every year.
