Modern healthcare and dentistry focuses on helping people get well and stay well, but all too often they overlook how each treatment offered and the materials used may impact a person’s body, and thusly, his or her overall health. Because Dr. Gecovich is committed to helping you maintain a healthy smile for life, she practices dentistry in a holistic and conservative manner.
Poor oral health, namely periodontal disease, has been liked with everything from heart disease to diabetes in the general population, and even premature delivery in pregnant women. For this reason, Dr. Gecovich places a great amount of focus on preventative care, such as general cleanings and periodontal care. Our office also uses digital x-rays, to cut back on unnecessary radiation exposure. Additional diagnostic tests, such as oral cancer screenings, are included with every comprehensive and periodic exam as well.
When determining what modes of treatment are best, Dr. Gecovich is mindful of maintaining as much natural tooth structure as possible. This means she uses materials and procedures that minimize the amount of tooth lost when restoring decayed teeth, and she utilizes a conservative approach to all cosmetic work.
Mercury fillings, also referred to as amalgam fillings, were once the gold-standard in dentistry. Although the FDA and the ADA still stand by their safety, many people have concerns over having mercury fillings placed. In addition to this, amalgam fillings typically require that more tooth structure be removed than composite, or tooth-colored, fillings do. For these reasons, Dr. Gecovich prefers to do all fillings in composite, rather than amalgam.
Whether you suffer from a metal allergy or simply prefer to have no metal in your restorative treatments, Dr. Gecovich is glad to accommodate your wishes and needs. Even more in-depth procedures, such as crowns, can be completed using materials such as porcelain and zirconia, providing beautiful and long-lasting results.
Sanitary Amalgam Removals
If you have existing amalgam fillings you’d like removed and replaced with mercury-free fillings, Dr. Gecovich can help. During this procedure, the tooth or teeth involved are isolated to minimize your exposure, and the amalgam is safely removed. Afterward, alternative tooth-colored materials, such as composite, are used to build the tooth back up again.
