I am trying to be much more health conscious. I’ve changed my diet and am considering going to a holistic dentist. The idea of going to a holistic dentist really appeals to me. It feels like I would have a dentist that would work with me in my health changes, including getting rid of my silver fillings. However, I am disabled and living on a small budget. Do holistic dentists cost more than general dentists?
Cassie
Dear Cassie,
It is great that you are working to increase your health. That is the type of decision you will not regret. Holistic dentists do a good job of working with patients on their health concerns and considering their whole body in the course of their treatment. The good news for you is that holistic dentistry is not a recognized specialty. This means that holistic dentists are just general dentists who follow a holistic philosophy. This means that they won’t have the higher fees of a specialist. However, that doesn’t mean every holistic dentist will be affordable. Every dentist sets their own prices. You can call around. You may want to start with the holistic dentists who also call themselves affordable dentists. They work to keep their prices down and will usually be willing to work with payments on payment plans.
Dealing with Silver/Amalgam Fillings
A holistic dentist is a good choice in changing out your silver fillings. Some people get rid of them for appearance’s sake. Others get rid of them because the majority ingredient is mercury. Understanding the nature of mercury and the problems it can cause with the human body, you can understand why many people want to exchange them for their mercury-free composite counterparts. The problem is that the procedure to remove them can actually expose you to more mercury, unless it is done with a special procedure. Holistic dentists, as well as, mercury-free dentists should know how to do a sanitary amalgam removal.
I hope this helps.
