I’m a little worried. I need my first dental filling. I asked him what that meant and he said he’ll do something called an amalgam filling. I looked that up when I got home and it turns out those have a ton of mercury in them. I called him telling him I’d rather have the other type of filling I learned about. He said they’re not as good. What do I do?
Penny
Dear Penny,
First, your dentist is wrong. The composite fillings are actually stronger and better for your teeth than their silver/amalgam counterparts. He’s likely only saying this because he hasn’t kept up with developments in fillings and doesn’t know the new bonding procedures.
In your place, I’d look for a mercury-free dentist. They only provide the white composite fillings and would give you the right filling for your teeth.
Never feel pressured into a procedure you are not comfortable with. If a dentist isn’t listening to you, there are plenty of dentists out there who will.
Consider a Holistic Dentist
If you want a dentist who doesn’t just focus on your teeth, but the health of your whole body as well, you may want to look at seeing a mercury-free dentist.
They are very careful about anything they use during treatment. Nothing will enter your body which will harm your health in any way. Plus, if you have any allergies or sensitivities they’ll be careful to work around them.
