I did not know that I was pregnant when I had my porcelain veneers done. When I told my mother in law that I was pregnant, after her excitement, she went into a panic because I had just had porcelain veneers done. She told me that no cosmetic work should be done while you’re pregnant. Then, she went away mumbling about my vanity and how I need to keep that in check during my child-bearing years. Aside from being really annoyed at her ruining what should have been a beautiful moment of celebration, I am a bit worried that she is right. Did I do something that could have harmed my baby?

Dear Sarah,
First, Congratulations! That is absolutely wonderful. Being a parent is one of the most important and beautiful things you can do. Second, take a deep breath. You didn’t do anything that could harm your baby, despite your mother-in-law’s histrionics.
In dental school, we are trained to schedule appointments for women who are expecting in the second trimester. This is because in the first trimester, the baby is more sensitive to foreign substances and in the third trimester moms usually will not find it comfortable to sit in a dental chair for any period of time.
When it comes to porcelain veneers, the only foreign substance that would have been introduced is a local anesthetic. By far, the most popular of these is Lidocaine, which has been shown to be completely safe in pregnancy. In fact, it is often used in the delivery room. You don’t have anything to worry about with this. You can even show my response to your mother-in-law.
I would go ahead and schedule a dental appointment for the time during your second trimester now. It’s important that you keep up with your oral healthcare. You want to avoid developing anything like a tooth infection. Preventative care is the best way to do that.
