I have an old crown which is starting to pick up stains. It now looks obviously different from my natural teeth. It’s also got some kind of weird gray line at the top. Will teeth whitening fix this?
Lisa
Dear Lisa,
You’ve got two problems going on with your dental crown. The first is just its age. You didn’t say how long you’ve had it, but did say it was old, so I’m assuming it has been at least ten years. The second issue is more because your dentist placed a porcelain-fused-to-metal dental crown on your teeth. All of those develop a gray line at the gumline.
Unfortunately, teeth whitening only works on natural tooth structure, so it will not solve the problems you are experiencing at the moment. The best way to solve this is to have the crown replaced. This time when your dentist replaces it, make sure they give you an all-porcelain crown.
These look much more natural and you will never have to worry about that gray line again.
